When most people think plastic surgery, they think of face-lifts, liposuction, and breast implants, but plastic surgeons also perform reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive procedures refer to surgeries performed on birth defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors, or diseases that are not strictly cosmetic in category. The three most common types of reconstructive procedures are cleft repair surgery, skin cancer surgery, and hand surgery.
