A physiatrist is also known as a rehabilitation physician. They are experts at diagnosing and treating pain, restoring maximum function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions, and provide non-surgical options for treatment. A physiatrist treats the whole person and not just the problem area. He or she typically leads a team of medical professionals and will provide the patient with a treatment plan, as well as provide an explanation of the patient’s medical problem. They are specialists in the treatment of nerves, muscles, and bones and have complete training in the medical specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
